There are two standard architectures that are defined for crash protected recorders; namely ARINC 757 and ARINC 767. The former is the more established architecture, whereas the latter was introduced for the Boeing 787 aircraft and is able to connect directly to an ARINC 664 network. It should be noted, that an ARINC 757 architecture can still be used in a predominantly ARINC 664 networked aircraft (such as with the Airbus A380), but an ARINC 767 recorder requires that all mandated inputs are ARINC 664.

A crash protected recorder in an ARINC 757 or ARINC 767 architecture is responsible for recording the following data types:

  • Audio from three aircrew channels
  • Audio from a cockpit area microphone
  • Flight data parameters
  • Data-link messages

Any other data type is normally outside of the scope of these standards. However, image recording from a cockpit area camera via an Ethernet interface is defined in ARINC 767. Image recording is not defined for ARINC 757. Both ARINC 757 and ARINC 767 recorders interface with the on-board maintenance system (OMS). Neither ARINC characteristic defines requirements for an automated flight information reporting system (AFIRS).
