Data acquisition systems on satellites are subject to larger doses of radition than space vehicles operating in low earth orbit due to increased exposure and longer periods operating in such an environment. Thus ratiation tolerant designes are necessary to provide reiable functionaility. The COTS performance of Curtiss-Wright's existing products are being further developed into a form that provides additional mission critical features that expand the operating envelope. This technology is now being leveraged to provide compact, radiation-tolerant Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) for distributed installation on satellites, replacing the concept of centralized data acquisition directly to the main computer. 

The RTUs are connected to the main computer via avionics buses, resulting in harness mass and complexity savings. Changes are simplified as there is no need to rebuild software and retest the main computer when the telemetry is reconfigured. They are also ideal in the role of hosted payload interface units, where the main computer requires no modification to communicate with third party units. With no EEPROM or no SRAM, the live on power-up RTUs provide a robust, cost-effective and weight-saving solution.

These units are being designed to:

  • Meet the requirements of high radiation space applications with built in latch up protection and single event upset resistant
  • Operate to specification after failures of components
  • Meet specific time reliability requirement of space missions
  • Meet the safety and mission assurance requirements of spaceflight
