To achieve mission objectives, U.S. Government (USG) customers increasingly require immediate use of the market’s most modern commercial hardware and software encryption technologies within National Security Systems (NSS).

Consequently, the National Security Agency/Central Security Service (NSA/CSS) is developing new ways to leverage emerging technologies to deliver more timely Information Assurance (IA) solutions for rapidly evolving customer requirements and emerging threats. The NSA/CSS’s Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) program enables commercial products to be used in layered solutions to protect classified NSS information. This program, and the resulting products, provide the ability to securely communicate, based on commercial standards, with a solution that can be fielded in months versus years.

CSfC Layer vs. Solution

The CSfC data-at-rest (DAR) capability package (CP) has evolved over five to six years. Starting with the initial draft version 0.8 in July 2014, the DAR CP has matured as expected with the ever-increasing CSfC-based storage applications in the field, and CP 4.8 provides the most recent evidence of that.  This paper reviews the most recent changes from CP 4.0 to 4.8, emphasizing the more important new topics – Unattended Operation Use Case and H/H solution and is the first in a series of white papers on CSfC.
