Today's sensor rich applications often have unique requirements, such as recording multiple channels of data, which call for application specific recorder solutions. Other special requirements may include unique packaging of the data recorder to meet requirements such as portability. Another common reason for application specific data recorder systems is special SWaP and environmental requirements, as in the case of an unmanned aerial vehicle that requires a small and rugged recorder.
In many cases, Curtiss-Wright's standard COTS data recorder products come close to meeting customers' special requirements and can be customized with minimal non-recurring engineering to meet customers' specifications.
Such application specific recorder solutions lower schedule risk, providing a more cost-effective system, in less time, than could be developed from scratch.

Curtiss-Wright's new CNS4 a high-performance conduction-cooled recording system is a good example of a product that is highly adaptable to customers' needs. The CNS4 offers a flexible I/O front-end which when combined with Curtiss-Wright's rugged universal capture card (RUCC) provides rugged data recording capabilities for a wide range of protocols such as sFPDP, GbE and 10GbE. The device offers 4 slots of scalable storage - up to 8 terabytes - and encryption options to meet security requirements. The CNS4 is a rugged ATR chassis that is designed to meet the most demanding deployed applications. A few examples of the many ways Curtiss-Wright has created application specific data recorder systems by adapting standard products to customers' needs include:

  • A large multi-channel recording and playback system that has been flight and environmentally qualified for use in intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (ISR) applications that require recording and playback of multiple channels of high-speed sensor data.
  • A six-channel high-speed 10 GbE and sFPDP recorder, a highly adaptable solution for recording and play back in advanced signal intelligence, RADAR, SONAR and image processing applications.    
  • A portable streaming data recorder, a standard product placed in a portable rugged laptop for use aboard a ship.

Now retired, Paul worked in engineering and engineering management positions for 19 years.
