Curtiss-Wright Boosts Support for Variable Message Format on TDL Network Simulator and Exerciser Systems

ASHBURN, Va. – November 20, 2024 – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions Division today announced that it has greatly expanded its support for Variable Message Format (VMF) messages on its industry-leading TCG Battlefield Operations Support System (BOSS®) tactical data link (TDL) testing, simulation, and platform integration solution and its TCG Ground Tactical Data Link System (GTS®) training and situational awareness ground station. The VMF protocol is commonly used either standalone or in conjunction with Link 16 and other TDLs, with cost-effective radios that support voice communications in air-to-air and air-to-ground applications on platforms such as F-35 combat aircraft. Defined in MIL-STD-6017, VMF operates over a wide range of radio frequency channels to support tactical communications using deployed Combat Net Radio (CNR) networks.

TCG BOSS is the “gold standard” multi-TDL solution worldwide for the test, verification, and validation of TDL implementations on air, land, sea, and space platforms. The TCG GTS enables realistic simulation of battlefield assets for both operations and training scenarios so that TDL operators, pilots, and other military personnel can be “trained as they fight”.

TCG BOSS provides intuitive and comprehensive capabilities for military end users and prime contractors to verify that TDL implementations delivered on aircraft and other military platforms conform to VMF, Link 16, Link 11, Link 22, Joint Range Extensions Application Protocol (JREAP), Situational Awareness Data Link (SADL), Automatic Identification System (AIS), Automatic Dependent Surveillance-Broadcast (ADS-B), and related TDL standards and interface definitions, including Standard Interface for Multiple Link Evaluation (SIMPLE) and Distributed Interactive Simulation (DIS). TCG GTS is an easy-to-use Link 16, Link 11, Link 22, VMF, JREAP, and SADL operations, training, and situational awareness ground station that is successfully deployed worldwide for Live, Virtual, and Constructive (LVC) pilot training as well as command and control (C2) systems for battlefield operations and training.

“We are excited to add expanded support for the VMF communication protocol to our industry-leading tactical data link training and simulation solutions, to deliver enhanced VMF TDL processing and multi-channel and multi-radio capabilities to the battlefield,” said Brian Perry, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions Division. “Our TCG BOSS and TCG GTS systems eliminate the need for multiple, often incompatible, test and simulation tools for VMF, Link 16, Link 11, and Link 22 by providing users with a single intuitive test and simulation package for the full spectrum of these TDLs.”

Government and military test agency engineers can now use TCG BOSS to verify a far wider range of VMF implementations to ensure that all VMF elements and assets are communicating with each other correctly during every phase of operation.

TCG BOSS and TCG GTS now support the following VMF features:

  • Comprehensive and detailed simulation and scenario generation and management with negative testing capabilities
  • Data injection into running simulations in real-time to provide a more realistic test and training environment
  • Multi-platform emulation of radios, terminals, and other communication systems
  • Intuitive tactical display and test/training scenario management and situational awareness
  • Command and Control (C2) and non-C2 tailored experience for multiple air, land, sea, and space platforms

TCG BOSS and TCG GTS are full-featured, complete packages, including multiple simultaneous terminal/radio control and monitoring, comprehensive data link message processing, validation and management, multi-link routing and forwarding, classified message support, network-enabled weapons, complete C2 and non-C2 simulation and operational control, automatic message generation, country-wide wide area network (WAN) situational awareness , pilot, and ground training, certification testing and validation, and much more.
