Curtiss-Wright Congratulates Sierra Nevada Corporation on a Successful Free Flight of Dream Chaser Spacecraft

Reusable Spacecraft conducts successful free-flight at Edwards Air Force Base

ASHBURN, Va. – December 6, 2017 -- Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division congratulates Sierra Nevada Corporation (SNC) on the historic free-flight test and runway landing of its Dream Chaser spacecraft. The successful flight took place on November 11, 2017, at Edwards Air Force Base in California. Curtiss-Wright’s Aerospace Instrumentation business unit supports the Dream Chaser with its cost-effective Radiation Tolerant Space COTS Data Acquisition System that incorporates groundbreaking radiation-tolerant Smart Backplane technology with COTS electronics modules.

SNC’s Dream Chaser is the only reusable, lifting-body, multi-mission-spacecraft capable of landing at commercial airports or spaceports able to accommodate large commercial aircraft – anywhere in the world. Selected to provide cargo delivery, return, and disposal services for the International Space Station under NASA’s Commercial Resupply Services 2 (CRS2) contract, the Dream Chaser is a safe, affordable, flexible, and reliable system capable of crewed and uncrewed transportation services to low earth orbit (LEO) destinations such as the space station. The Dream Chaser is scheduled to go to the space station circa 2019 for cargo resupply services.

“Curtiss-Wright applauds Sierra Nevada Corporation on the recent highly successful free-flight test and runway landing of the important new Dream Chaser spacecraft,” said Lynn Bamford, Senior Vice President and General Manager, Defense Solutions division. “We are especially proud to support this new cargo system with our cost-effective COTS-based Smart Backplane electronics technology, which is helping lower the cost of the Dream Chaser’s important mission.”
