Flexibility required? - FMCs

The VITA 57 FMC standard provides flexibility in adapting to the constantly changing needs for I/O functionality. I/O design and management pose considerable challenges for system designers because of the large number and variety of interfaces needed. Embedded systems all require different sets of I/O based on the applications and markets. Although PMC and XMC modules allow adaption of some I/O functionality, they often introduce data overhead and system complexities caused by the host and mezzanine card architectures and software. FPGA processor cards have been used by system designers to customize the interfaces through off-the-shelf IP. FMC offers a small mezzanine card to directly control the I/O via the FPGA on the host card.
