The VPX2500 Physical Layer Switch (PLS) with rear I/O is a managed, non-blocking cross-point switch implemented on a VITA 46-compliant 6U, 0.8" VPX single-slot conduction-cooled rugged card, supporting multiple data rates up to 2.5 Gb/s. The VPX2500 6U VPX cross-point switch provides an 18-port switch solution via VPX rear I/O backplane connections. Each port input provides an option of data retiming or bypassing the retiming circuitry altogether. The protocol or structure of data routed through the switch is ignored by the VPX2500 VPX cross-point switch and is unaltered by its passage through the switch. Communication with the VPX2500 is through its RS-232 link, where the user can log on and use the command line interface (CLI) to configure the cross-point, set up access levers, port topology, retiming option, and check status.
Redundancy: Redundancy is important in many applications, but military vessels are especially liable to damage. In this application, sensors and radar signals are routed to a PLS and multiplexed in a redundancy configuration. If the ship is damaged on one side, the data will still be available via the alternate path.
Media Conversion: Sensor signals from 300 meters away can be sent to the switch for conversion to copper. Copper signals then can be routed to the VPX backplane for processing.
Multi-Cast: A sensor is sending its collected data via multiple channels, as is typical for transporting such large amounts of sensor information. The cross-point switch provides the capability to send the same data to multiple destinations. Suffering no data loss, the cross-point switch passes the data to multiple data processors and recorders without slowing down the sensor.
