With a large number of gates, hardware multipliers and direct connections to analog IO devices, FPGAs enable efficient implementation of digital signal processing applications including radar, SIGINT (signal intelligence), EW (Electronic Warfare) and image processing. FPGAs perform well in FFTs, pulse compression, filters and digital down converters. In deployed systems, an FPGA's technical advantage translates to smaller, lower-power and lower-cost systems. For some applications, FPGAs are the only practical solution.
