DAC-MOD1 Dual 210MSPS, 14-bit DAC
The DAC-MOD1, designed for development of embedded applications, features two channels of 210 MSPS, 14-bit digital-to-analog conversion. A front panel mezzanine module, the DAC-MOD1 offers developers analog I/O functionality for Curtiss-Wright's FPGA-based processing PMC modules.
The DAC-MOD1 is designed to accommodate external clock sources. The module makes the sampling clock and trigger available to the host FPGA for application control. The FPGA controls digital I/O signals that are routed to the front panel. These signals can support synchronization of multiple boards or can be used as alternative triggers.
Curtiss-Wright offers a range of I/O modules, including the DAC-MOD1, for use with the Xilinx® Virtex®-5 based PMC-FPGA05 and XMC-FPGA05D products. These modules were created to provide a choice of I/O for direct connection to the host FPGA PMC/XMC. This design feature prevents bottlenecks, providing developers a rich selection of I/O for a highly integrated processing solution.
The I/O modules for PMC-FPGA05 and XMC-FPGA05D products are designed for simplicity. They consist only of connectors, analog converters or transceivers, and buffers. The host FPGA takes care of controlling data handling and interface timing.
The simple design makes the work of developers easier. Development of new application-specific modules is a relatively straightforward process for applications in which available PCB space is sufficient. Curtiss-Wright provides support with a design reference for developing new modules.
Up to 138 signals are provided by the module host connector, directly connected to the FPGA. The signals are routed as LVDS pairs, optimizing data speed and flexibility. Curtiss-Wright programs the FPGA to recognize characteristics of the interface, including impedance. Four of the digital I/O pairs can be allocated to deliver local or global clock signals depending on capabilities of the host board.
In another of its roles, the host module connector provides a variety of power supplies, including 2V5, 3V3 and 5V. This feature greatly reduces space required for module-specific power supply generation, reserving more PCB space for I/O.
