The Acra KAM-500 backplane controller supports chassis programming via Ethernet using the Internet Engineering Task Force (IETF) TFTP (as defined in IETF RFC 1350 The TFTP Protocol). Synchronization with an external time master is achieved with an external SNTPv4 server (IETF RFC 5905 Network Time Protocol: Protocol and Algorithms Specification).
The KAD/BCU/143 supports the Simple Network Management Protocol version 2c (SNMPv2c) that can be used to query and discover configuration of the chassis.
Upon receipt of a programming packet, the module switches to program/verify mode, where it can read or write data blocks to or from any module within an Acra KAM-500 chassis.
In acquisition mode, some or all acquired data is transferred from the backplane to the onboard CVT. Onboard, it is packetized into either an IENA or an iNET-X application layer packet and then transmitted. For asynchronous bus data, the KAD/BCU/143 supports aperiodic transmission, whereby a packet is not generated if no fresh data has been acquired from a packetizer user-module.
