Curtiss-Wright provides sophisticated ground data processing systems based on cutting edge bit synchronizer, Smart Source Selector, decommutator technology and flight test software. The resulting systems significantly improve signal reception and increase data throughput. Smart Source Selection offers alternatives not previously available with diversity combiners and simple best data selectors. It first passes the signals through cutting edge bit synchronizers and then repeatedly compares different signals – dynamically adjusting one signal’s timing to ensure data coherency. Large latencies between diversity streams are accounted for through buffers. Curtiss-Wright’s Smart Source Selectors use an all-digital design utilizing two independent programmable matched filters and PLLs to track deviations in the bitrate of the received signal pair. Multi-stage equalizers are used to compensate for pulse-shape inter-symbol interference while a delay between switching operations eliminates switching noise.

The selection of what portions of data to use from each diversity source is based on SNR metrics and the alignment status of each stream. Either a single stream is selected, or multiple steams are added and their polarities used to generate a result. As Smart Source Selection uses soft bit estimates, all possible diversity strategies (polar, frequency, spatial etc.) are supported. Even encrypted diversity signals can be resolved into a single PCM stream. Smart Source Selectors lead to theoretical BER improvements of 3 dB with 2 channels, 6 dB with four and 9 dB with eight. This ground station technology is extendable for even greater flexibility and improved signal quality where requirements demand.

These ground data systems are specifically tailored to meet the demanding needs of real-time applications, leveraging Curtiss-Wright’s heritage in designing flight test solutions. The telemetry ground stations offer an end to end solution from receiver to processed data with tightly integrated hardware and software. GS Studio 3 setup and management software facilitates quick and easy configuration changes. GS Works 7 is the advanced real-time/post processing analysis software (powered by IADS technology) that completes the ground station solution. It has a host of features that allows displays, data and analysis techniques to be built, tested and saved with little effort at any time before or during the mission.
