In high radiation environments, such as experienced by orbiting satellites, electronics must be protected against failure. Effective electronics and mitigation strategies have been developed but they are extremely expensive and or heavy.
A more rugged version of Curtiss-Wright’s Space COTS data acquisition products are currently in development into a form that provides additional mission critical functionality and radiation protection. This development is for use in Remote Terminal Units (RTUs) for distributed installation on satellites and other mission critical operational flight instrumentation. RTUs connect to the main computer via avionics busses, resulting in a saving in harness mass and complexity compared to the concept of centralized data acquisition directly linked to the main computer. Changes are simplified as there is no need to rebuild software and retest the main computer when the telemetry is reconfigured
