Benefits of an Integrated Secure Boot for Mission-Critical Systems

In today’s contested digital world, threats to US military operations are physical and, now more than ever, virtual. Secure boot is foundational threat mitigation for today’s digital age, detecting and defeating several types of attacks that target the boot process and firmware of embedded systems. The challenge with secure boot is its implementation is highly dependent on the low-level firmware and hardware provided by today’s computing boards. Consequently, DOD programs looking to reduce risk and cost should seek out board vendors who address secure boot either by themselves or by working with a partner.

In 2021, the US GAO released a report calling for more DOD programs to meet cybersecurity requirements. While programmatic guidance would be beneficial, suppliers can also be proactive, delivering solutions with built-in security that anticipate standard cybersecurity requirements like a secure boot. Indeed, a proactive approach to security, even a cooperative approach by partnering suppliers, can help large prime integrators more rapidly deliver cyber-ready solutions that can meet evolving threats.
