Curtiss-Wright's New Family of Pre-Integrated Application-Specific Mission Management Systems Provides Base Architecture to Speed Development

First offering, a Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Electronic Warfare (EW) base system speed development of high-performance deployed applications

ASHBURN, Va. – July 6, 2017 – Curtiss-Wright’s Defense Solutions division today introduced a new family of pre-integrated rugged mission management systems designed to lower the cost, speed the development, and reduce the design risk for deployed application-specific solutions. Through the use of fully integrated and tested industry-leading COTS modules, these base systems are architected, pre-qualified, and pre-verified to address the needs of specific mission requirements. By providing a proven pre-configured base solution, these systems deliver a significant “headstart” that significantly reduces the integrator’s development cycle and costs. Using one of Curtiss-Wright’s pre-integrated hardware solution sets as their starting point, a system integrator can easily and quickly customize the base system with application-specific software and/or expanding the base system with additional components to meet their application’s unique requirements. The first member of this innovative new family of pre-integrated solutions is designed for Software Defined Radio (SDR) and Electronic Warfare (EW) applications. It will be followed by announcements for additional application-specific pre-integrated base systems designed for applications such as Radar, EO/IR, and Video/Display.

“More and more frequently, our customers are asking us to help them jumpstart their application-specific system designs with cost-effective pre-integrated system architectures that quickly get them most of the way to completion of their development by using proven COTS elements,” said Lynn Bamford, senior vice president and general manager, Curtiss-Wright Defense Solutions division. “Our new family of application-specific mission management systems hits the sweet spot for these designers, with pre-rolled systems targeted for applications such as Software Defined Radio and Electronic Warfare. These high-TRL systems provide our customers with an easy-to-customize base system that delivers a head-start for faster deployment while lowering the risk to program schedule and budget.”

About the Pre-Configured Software Defined Radio and Electronic Warfare Base System

Curtiss-Wright’s SDR/EW base system combines proven GigaHertz (GHz) sampling data rates and FPGA-based processing. The 3U OpenVPX™-based mission processing architecture features four Curtiss-Wright VPX3-530 ADC/DAC Transceiver modules, an XCLK1 clock synchronizer, and a 28VDC PSU3-THOR Power Supply. It also provides a choice of VPX3-1257, VPX3-1258, or VPX3-1259 Intel-based single board computer (SBC), depending on the system integrator’s preferred performance envelope.

The SDR/EW base system supports high-capacity removable storage via a rugged Removable Memory Cartridge (RMC) that supports up to 2TB of SSD SATA-based memory. The system delivers sixteen analog input channels (12-bit up to 2 Gsps) and eight output channels (14-bit < 2.8 Gsps) for interfacing to the customer-supplied tuner.

Weighing ~20 lb., the SDR/EW system is housed in a field-proven MPMC-9354 rugged mission computer chassis that features an embedded thermal management system and cools up to 485 watts of power at 71°C at sea level via forced convection cooling. The system is qualified to MIL-STD-704F, MIL-STD-810, and MIL-STD-461 standards. Curtiss-Wright’s mid-size SDR/EW base system enables customers to select their preferred RF tuner and software applications (i.e. GNU Radio, Red Hawk, or SCA).
