DAR Series Part 2: Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC)

The National Security Agency’s (NSA) Commercial Solutions for Classified (CSfC) program is a cybersecurity initiative that harnesses commercial innovation to deliver secure solutions quickly and efficiently. The program is based on the principle that properly configured and layered commercial solutions can adequately protect classified data in a wide variety of applications.

The CSfC program was developed to meet the growing need to provide government agencies with prompt access to the latest commercial technologies, and enable the NSA to deliver cybersecurity solutions more quickly and cost-effectively.

This white paper is the second in a four-part series discussing data-at-rest (DAR) encryption. The first paper in the series explored the reasons for protecting DAR, encryption basics, and two encryptor types – CSfC and Type 1. CSfC and Type 1 are NSA-approved encryption programs that support the protection of classified DAR. This paper focuses on CSfC and provides details and background information on this vital NSA program. The third white paper in the series examines public information regarding NSA Type 1 encryption, while the fourth white paper compares CSfC and Type 1 to propose a methodology and key factors to consider when selecting an encryption solution for DAR.
